Photographs were taken of the Lorton Prison Maximum Security Facility and Lorton Reformatory on June 2, 2012 with permission of armed guards. The access was arranged through Fairfax County which is now the owner of the facility. Today the guards provide security to keep outsiders from getting into the closed facility compared to the previous practice of keeping the inmates grom getting out!
Classically inspired, symmetrical dormitory complexes were constructed instead of cellblocks
. The brick buildings were built by the prisoners themselves, using brick manufactured at the on-site kiln complex located on the banks of the Occoquan. It became known in its later years, however, as an outdated and badly overcrowded facility. The last prisoners were removed from Lorton Reformatory late in 2001
